Leo Joe Mora

Leo J. Mora Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on March 7, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on July 30, 1931, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Leo was the son of Remijio Ricardo Mora and Encarnacion Romero Mora. Leo's dedication to his country began at a young age when he enlisted in the United States Army on October 20, 1948, in Los Angeles, California. He proudly served as a sergeant during the Korean War, where he honed his skills as a gunsmith. His service was marked by bravery and commitment, earning him several commendations, including the Korean Service Medal with bronze stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged on July 24, 1952. On August 11, 1952, Leo married the love of his life, Placida Dulcinea Casias, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The two met at a U.SO dance while he was stationed at the Fort Carson Army Base. Together, they left behind city life to fulfill their dream of raising a family in Cañon, Colorado, where they nurtured their seven children and built a home filled with love and laughter. Leo spent many years working at the Dica Perl mine before retiring, but his greatest joy came from his family. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, cherishing the time spent with his children, grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Throughout his life, Leo was known for his big heart and strong sense of community. He was actively involved in the VFW and served in the honor guard, reflecting his commitment to honoring his fellow veterans. Leo enjoyed farming, traveling, and spending quality time with his family, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Placida; his parents; siblings Remijio Ricardo Mora Jr., Juanita Colbert, Eliseo Remijio Mora, Cecilia Guzman, Alfredo Mora, and Verna Mora; and his two great-grandchildren, Chase Martinez and Jameson Martinez. He is also preceded in death by his two children, Conrad “Terry” Mora and Carnation Rose Mora. Leo is survived by his children: Catherine Luevano, Cindy Mora, Leo Joseph Mora Jr. (Gerri Mora), Debbie Ann Mora, and Maria Theresa (Ricky) Garcia. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Dominic Herrera, Terrence Luevano, Gabriel Martinez, Pamela Mora-Lopez, Kayte Mora, Alexandria Aimetti, Roxanne Quintana, Christopher Gonzales, Jodi Mora-Abila, Sabrina Jimenez, Amanda Garcia, Jamie Garcia, and Erik Garcia. A Rosary for Leo will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 7 PM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos, Colorado. The Mass of the Resurrection will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the same church, with interment to follow at Las Mesitas Cemetery, where he will receive military honors. Leo's legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered as an amazing man who touched the lives of many.
