Alex “Rocky” S. Snyder March 18, 1953 - May 17, 2026 Alex “Rocky” S. Snyder, beloved father, brother, grandfather, friend, and member of the Fort Garland community, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, at his daughter's residence surrounded by the love of his family. He was 73 years old. Rocky was born on March 18, 1953, Mishawaka to Alex S. Snyder and Sarieta Josephine Peterson. Proudly known as the second Snyder in his family line, Rocky carried his name with strength, hard work, and honor throughout his life. A former resident of Fort Garland, Rocky was widely recognized throughout the town for his honest and abrasive nature, his well-known orange hat, and the sharp wit that kept everyone on their toes. His daughter often lovingly referred to him as “cantankerous,” a fitting description for a man who could be a clever smartass and give everyone a hard time, yet still show kindness in his own unforgettable way. It was a familiar sight to see him walking his daily miles through the community. The Fort Garland community always made sure the walking areas remained maintained so Rocky could continue the walks he loved so much. His presence became a comforting and unforgettable part of the town itself. Rocky spent the majority of his life working as a self-employed logger, a profession he truly loved and took immense pride in. Logging was more than work to him - it was his passion, his peace, and a reflection of the hardworking man he was. His dedication and strong work ethic were admired by many who knew him. He was also a proud member of the organization known as BAALHS. Beyond his work, Rocky found happiness in traveling around the world, attending concerts, camping beneath the stars, listening to music, and most importantly, spending time with his family. One of the greatest joys in his life was taking his children and grandchildren on trips from state to state, creating lifelong memories filled with adventures, laughter, and togetherness. He lived a life filled with stories, experiences, love, and unforgettable moments that his family will forever cherish. Rocky will be remembered for his free spirit, his resilience, his love for the outdoors, and the genuine kindness he showed those around him. To know Rocky was to know someone who appreciated life’s simple moments - a walk through town, music playing in the background, conversations with loved ones, and the beauty of nature surrounding him. He is survived by his loving daughter, Sara (Joe) Derringer; Kay C. Snyder; his sons, Alex S. Snyder III and John Snyder; his brothers, Roger Najdek, Ernie Petzke, and Kelvin Petzke; and his sister, Jeanine Petzke. He also leaves behind extended family members, dear friends, and a community that will deeply miss seeing his familiar face and hat around town. Rocky was preceded in death by his parents, Alex S. Snyder and Sarieta J. Peterson; his beloved daughter, Angie Snyder; and his sisters, Penny Wentworth and Patsy Barnes. Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who loved him, Rocky’s memory will continue to live on through the stories shared, the miles walked, the music played, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey.
