Marie Emily Torres (née Montano) died peacefully at 93, surrounded by family, on January 26th, 2024, in Erie, Colorado. Born November 12th, 1930, her life was a testament to the enduring power of kindness. Marie spent most of her life in the San Luis Valley, graduating from Monta Vista High School. In Monte Vista, she met and married Jake Michael Torres, her lifelong husband of over 70 years, with whom she raised four sons. Marie was a dedicated working mother who raised a family while also pursuing a career that reflected her passion for nurturing and caring for others. She was a nurse at Monte Vista Hospital and later contributed to her alma mater’s food services program. She was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and actively participated in the Ferdinand and Isabella Club. She demonstrated an unwavering commitment to her sons, an unconditional love for her grandchildren and extended family, and a passion for helping others. A playful yet profound kindness shaped her heart. During her lifetime, Marie advocated for the successful creation of a playground that helped nurture family and community life in Monte Vista. This space, cherished by her grandchildren and the community, stands as a lasting symbol of her legacy. Marie's dedication to political activism, particularly her support for JFK’s presidential campaign, exemplified civic engagement. While canvassing for Kennedy, she brought her sons along, making the endeavor not only a political act but also a deeply personal one. Through her actions, she instilled in her sons the importance of civic engagement and the profound impact each individual can have for the greater good. Although preceded in death by her husband, Jake, and her son, Tommy, Marie leaves a legacy of love and resilience in her sons, Timothy, Tyler, and Terry, as well as in her cherished grandchildren. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Charleston Assisted Living Center in Erie, Colorado, for their compassionate care during Marie’s final years. In particular, we would like to thank Julie, who loved Marie like family. The dedication of the caregivers at Charleston brought immeasurable comfort and happiness to both Jake and Marie. The family also wishes to extend an invitation to all those who loved Marie: Services will take place at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Monte Vista, Colorado, on February 2nd, 2024. We invite friends and family to join us for the viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by the recitation of the Rosary at 10:30 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will commence at 11:00 a.m. Those wishing to express condolences are welcome to donate to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (part of the San Juan Catholic Community).
