Maria Lucy Estrea Aguirre, known lovingly to all as Lucy, age 88, a lifelong resident of the San Luis Valley, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, in Alamosa, Colorado, surrounded by the love and legacy of her family. Lucy was born on July 9, 1937, in Antonito, Colorado, to Amadeo Velasquez and Annie Velasquez. She was raised with strong values of faith, perseverance, and dedication—qualities that guided her throughout her life. Lucy spent most of her working years as a laborer, known for her strong work ethic, resilience, and unwavering commitment to providing for her family. On her life’s journey, Lucy shared many years of marriage with her beloved husband, Manuel Aguirre, who preceded her in death. Together, they built a large and loving family that remained the center of Lucy’s world. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Amadeo and Annie Velasquez; her brothers and sisters; and one cherished grandson. Lucy’s greatest joy came from her family, whom she loved deeply and cared for selflessly. She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Lucero (Charlie), Marline Aguirre, Mathilda Westerman (David), and Angela Diera (Jesus); and her sons, Michael Aguirre, Manuel Aguirre Jr., Chris Aguirre (Christina), and Raymond Aguirre (Chelsie). She is also survived by her sisters, Sally Velasquez and Virginia Cisneros, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever cherish her memory. Lucy found happiness in life’s simple and meaningful moments. She had a deep love for gardening and took pride in nurturing her plants. She enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors, as well as gathering piñon, a tradition she held close to her heart. Lucy was a gifted cook whose meals brought family together, and she took immense pride in caring for her grandchildren, always ensuring they felt loved, safe, and supported. She also enjoyed visits to the casino, where her vibrant spirit and sense of humor shone. Lucy will be remembered for her strength, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family. She lived a life defined by hard work, sacrifice, and unconditional love. Her presence was a source of comfort and guidance, and her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched.
