Lucy passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, at the age of 93. Born in La Jara, CO on October 21, 1931, Lucy was a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend who lived a full and vibrant life marked by kindness and resilience. Lucy had a passion for spiritual growth, education, healthy cooking, sewing, and making the world a more peaceful place. Throughout her years, Lucy made a lasting impact on those around her, whether through her love and care of family, connection with friends, and her quick wit and humor. Her wisdom, laughter, and unwavering support will forever be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Lucy was previously married to Pete DeHerrera sharing cherished years together and building a strong foundation for their family. A devoted parent, Lucy was preceded in death by her beloved children, Debbie DeHerrera, Michael DeHerrera, daughter-in-law Janet DeHerrera, and grandchildren Chuck DeHerrera, Steven DeHerrera, and Andrea Madrid, who she loved beyond measure and carried in their heart every day. Their memory remained a guiding light in Lucy’s life. Lucy is survived by her loving children Charles DeHerrera (Glenda), Alan (Ann-Marie) DeHerrera, Diana Strong, John (Jacqueline) DeHerrera, daughter-in-law Betty (the late Michael DeHerrera), and her treasured grandchildren (David, Billy, Tobias, James, Christian, Amanda, Ashley) and great grandchildren who brought immense joy and pride. Her wisdom, kindness, and stories will live on in the next generations. Lucy’s passions extended well beyond her family. She was a dedicated high school special education teacher who touched the lives of countless students with her compassion, patience, and commitment. In her personal life, Lucy practiced daily meditation, which she believed helped cultivate peace, mindfulness, and a deeper sense of connection—both within herself and in the world around her. A service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa, CO on May 23, at 10:00 am, where friends and family can gather to celebrate a life well lived.
