Joe I. Taylor

Longtime Alamosa/Antonito resident Joe I. Taylor, 85, passed away on September 5, 2022 at his home under hospice care, in the company of his loving family. Jose was born on January 17, 1937 in San Pablo, Colorado, the son of Anastacio Taylor and Beatrice Mondragon. Joe was well known for his work he did as a detention Deputy- Dispatch officer in Conejos County. In his free time he enjoyed going fishing, camping, gathering firewood, gardening, and having yard sales and going to yard sales. Joe also had a talent for training dogs. He loved and cherished the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren and to show his love for his grandchildren, Jose went out and bought an old ambulance stripped it down and made it into a camper and when that became too small he went out and bought a school bus so he could enjoy time with all his grandchildren. Jose loved to be out in the llanos (Punche Valley) where he would take his grandkids hiking, fishing, and looking in the old mines. He was very active in the Conejos County Search & Rescue, Conejos County Sheriff Posse. Jose was also a very active and contributing member of the SPMDTU. He was very active in his community. Jose was a strike organizer, committed to helping mexicano workers who in the years during and following WWII were an oppressed group. While he fought for the mexicanos in Antonito, he was generous with everyone he came in contact with. Survivors include his daughters Shanda Taylor (Richard Lucero), Monica (Kevin) Coleman both of Alamosa, CO; son Jose Inez Taylor Jr., of Alamosa, CO; grandchildren Jose Inez Taylor III, Alexander Taylor Cardenas, Danielle Faith Taylor, Jenna Beth Taylor, Anthony Llanez, Alicia Escobido, Desiree Greenburg, great-grandchild Logan Sean Taylor, Jose Taylor IV, sister Tonita Trujillo of Colorado Springs, CO; brother Robert (Orlinda) Taylor of Antonito, CO and Best friends James Taggert & Carol Counihan,Christal Konkol, Ubaldo & Priscille Mares. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Bertha Marquez Taylor, son Joe Taylor, second wife Idelle Montano Taylor, Daughters Elizabeth Taylor, Cody Lee Taylor. Brother Felix (Rose) Taylor, Sister Cordelia (Ernest) Ornelas, Martha (Larry) Muilenburg, and Marvin (Joe) Mascotti. Cremation was chosen and a Memorial Service will be held on September 17, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Conejos.
